As both an American and EU citizen, Toby Romero is a bi-continental Cinematographer based in Los Angeles and available for work worldwide.

Toby’s calling to filmmaking took center stage after his acceptance into the Ghetto Film School (GFS) Fellowship at age 15. He graduated from NYU with honors, earning a BFA in Film & Television Production. During his studies, he spent summers at Warner Bros. as a REACH Honorship Scholar in a four-year internship, working with New Line Cinema and Netflix’s Fuller House.

His 2021 short film The Ladder, where he served as Director of Photography, received coverage by the Associated Press and U.S. News & World Report. In 2022, he was awarded the Volker Bahnemann Award for Outstanding Cinematography, presented by ARRI and NYU.

In 2023, Toby operated camera on John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams, now streaming on Peacock. The following year marked a major step forward in his career, as he shot his first two feature-length projects—one of which, a reimagining of The Ladder, is currently enjoying a successful festival run.

Most recently, Toby has expanded his work in documentaries and music videos, collaborating with iconic artists such as Taylor Swift and KRS-One. His projects reflect a dynamic range, capturing stories through both intimate vérité and stylized visual storytelling.

From narrative films and commercials to branded and musical content, Toby’s work has taken him across the globe. His Norwegian and Latino roots inform a distinctive visual language—rooted in contrast, emotional resonance, and cultural depth. He is most passionate about shaping light with new directors and bringing a psychological lens to underrepresented stories.

When not on set, Toby can be found surfing the Pacific or snowboarding in the Rockies.
